The Irish Independent reported at the end of August on the crisis conditions affecting Irish mushroom growers.
The confluence of weather, currency and rising costs are combining to put increased pressure on the remaining mushroom growers in the country.
At the beginning of September with Brexit headwinds dragging the sterling / euro rate into the red zone for Irish growers, the going is getting beyond tough.
Adding into the mix is the scarcity of straw after one of the hottest, driest summer on record, pushing substrate prices through the roof. This time of year has always been a tough one for mushrooms growers, and seems to be more so this year, due to these externalities.
Once again it seems that September is a shake-out month, making or breaking those that remain in the industry.
