A new study by the boffins at Penn State University has looked at the role of mushrooms in glucose regulation.
Their study in lean mice has shown some promising results and may lead to experimentation with humans to discern if the pre-biotic use of mushrooms might indeed help in the fight against type 2 diabetes.
They suggest that better understanding this connection between mushrooms and gut microbes in mice could one day pave the way for new diabetes treatments and prevention strategies for people.
Apparently we are more microbe than human - if you count all the cells in your body, only 43% are human, the rest is our microbiome and includes bacteria, viruses, fungi and single-celled archaea. Ingesting substances that affect our microbiome is regarded as the new avenue to health and well-being. It is not yet fully understood at the present time, but is a burgeoning field of research.
