Morrisons has pledged that that by no later than 2025, all of its own-brand plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
They’re removing the plastic sleeve from cucumbers at the moment which will take quite a bit of plastic out of the stores.
Supermarkets have argued that many of the most unpopular pieces of packaging – such as plastic around cucumbers – helps extends the shelf life of food, and therefore it is worth keeping if it can cut down on wastage overall.
Morrisons own experts concede that removing the plastic sleeve will make the cucumbers more perishable, by about two days. The plastic preservation argument is a persuasive one. Who knows when all the pros and cons are added up what is the sensible option?
