The tale of the cow that strayed from Bulgaria into Serbia and then back again, sparking a potential bovine death sentence, is a story that might resonate with farmers along the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Penka the cow wandered from its farm across the border from EU to no EU state, without of course the requisite papers. It faced quarantine and a possible death sentence. A petition to save Penka garnered 30,000 signatures, including that of Sir Paul McCartney.
The Bulgarian food safety agency stated: “Laboratory analyses are negative for all tested diseases. It will not be killed.” Poor old Penka, lives to graze another day. What for those cows that bestride the “Irish” Border in a post Brexit scenario?
