Dr Mark Hyman has a new book out called Food WTF Should I Eat ( £14.99 Hodder and Stoughton.)
In it he questions the vegetables that we’re all eating, saying that we should be eating more of the right kind of veg.
White potatoes come in for a bit of a hammering, as does iceberg lettuce and aubergine and tomatoes.
Happily though mushrooms do make the grade, especially vitamin D enhanced mushrooms, along with shiitake, oyster and cremini mushrooms. Porcini mushrooms are deemed to be especially good for Vitamin D.
The new science of nutrigenomics is alluded to - a burgeoning scientific field of the future, where we will get to know the precise type of food needed to maximise health and protect against disease. Watch that space!
