The fodder crisis in Ireland has been down to key weather factors this winter, including the hurricanes and snowstorms of late.
Traditionally by St. Patrick’s day farmers would expect to have livestock grazing in fields. Waterlogged fields due to extreme rainfall and prolonged cold conditions in springtime stalling grass growth, make fodder shortages a more regular occurence.
The borrowing days at the start of April didn’t bring much relief, but tipping into the end of the month the temperatures were rising at least. There were also meetings arranged between Minister Michael Creed and the main banks to discuss steps to alleviate the short-term financial pressures on farmers.
