The Irish Government’s €116 billion development plan for the country over the next two decades has been launched in Sligo.
Project Ireland 2040 is aiming to spread economic development across the country which will see a population expansion of one million people over the lifetime of the plan.
In the report it says: “The agri-food sector continues to play an integral part in Ireland’s economy and is our largest indigenous industry, contributing 173,400 direct jobs and generating 10.4% of merchandise exports in 2016.” There’s a €1 billion Rural Development Fund included in the plan and a €500 million Climate Action Fund.
It all sounds very impressive - but if spread over the next 22 years it begins to look more banal. But as some wag suggested - work the begins in 2039
