July and August are regarded as the silly season in press circles, where the daftest stories make the news columns. One daftish item caught Stalker’s eye this month.
The headline was 12 per cent of young people have never seen a cow. Talk about a ‘huh’ moment.
Apparently one in eight young people in the UK has never seen a cow in real life. According to a survey, they may have spotted a cow on television, but 12 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds are so unfamiliar with the countryside that they've never seen cattle in the real world.
The research also found a substantial lack of knowledge among young adults when it came to basic fruit and vegetables. More than half did not know strawberries were a summer fruit. All in 2,000 people were polled by the Prince’s Countryside fund for the survey.
Makes you think doesn’t it. How can so many be so removed from the origins of food.
However if you’re a city dweller who can get strawberries all year round in the supermarket, it’s plausible you wouldn’t know that it’s a summer fruit.
