In Ireland the fatality rate for farmers was 10 times that of the average worker between 2009 and 2015.
The ERSI produced a report entitled Risk Taking and Accidents on Irish Farms which indicates that the trend in fatalities is exacerbated by excessive risk taking.
Summer is especially associated with on farm accidents, and every farmer should take a moment to assimilate the ideas produced in the report. Using proper safety equipment, and high vis vests, checking that machinery is in good working order before use, and use of restraints when treating animals are all highlighted.
Also the storage of chemicals is also pinpointed - making sure dangerous substances are stored out of reach of any children.
