There was an interesting advert running in the national press in the UK in mid-May. The advert was run by Aldi UK , headed “The lowest priced shop”.
With till receipts showing the total cost for an average shop in the main supermarkets in the UK market - Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda and finally Aldi. Looking in at the basket of goods bought, there in the middle is Large Flat Mushrooms.
The mushrooms range from £1.19 the most costly in Waitrose, to £0.79 in Aldi. They’re priced at £1 in Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, and at 83 pence in Tesco and Asda.
The advert says that Aldi has the highest number of awards for quality too. But looking at that price differential over the six stores, there’s a 50 per cent difference between the cheapest and the most expensive.
Stalker notices that Farmdrop the online website and app was quoting £1.20 at the same time. Their stated objective is to ensure that the producers get a fair cut of the action.
