Once again the mushroom was dropped in Pennsylvania to usher in the New Year. In Kennett Square. the town, surrounded by acres of fertile fungus fields, and known as the Mushroom Capital of the World, for the fourth time ever, a 700-pound stainless-steel mushroom was lowered in a countdown to the new year.
Pennsylvania has a reputation for doing New Year's night right. The commonwealth is said to have more New Year's drops - of various objects and entities - than any other state.
In Pittsburgh "The Future of Pittsburgh" a 1,000-pound lighted spheroid made entirely of recycled materials, symbolizing Pittsburgh's aspirations to be a green city , is dropped. In the town of Carlisle they have a button contest in which visitors and residents can design a button to be dropped for New Year's Eve. The result is a 50-pound, lighted, aluminum-framed button.
