BBC Radio 4 had a programme on last month called Natural Histories.
One episode went in search of the fly agaric, the toadstool with the red cap and the white spots, the one that fairies sit on.
The quest brings insights not only into fungi, without which life would literally not be worth living, but also father Christmas, Alice in wonderland, religious beliefs and hallucinogens.
