When the Reuters news agency focuses in on the Irish mushroom sector you know that things are serious. The mid-October report by the agency said that the mushroom industry was a dire warning to the rest of the economy on what could happen if sterling stays weakened for any length of time.
Seems like the Irish Mushroom Industry is being likened to the canaries down the mine shafts in a post-Brexit world.
Essentially the industry is being gambled away by currency speculators, for it is sure that fundamentals have not yet shifted radically post the vote for British withdrawal from the EU. It can only be hoped that there will be some alleviation on the sterling pressure for the sector.
Not all prognostications of gloom and doom come to pass, but there is a palpable sense that something urgent needs to happen to prevent a sectoral demise.
