The Irish Independent reported mid-October that traders are reporting a steady market for straw despite the ongoing difficulties in the mushroom sector.
The price of bales had slipped to €30-35/bale, back around €5/bale on last year, traders maintained that strong demand from farmer buyers in the west and North had stabilised prices.
"In the last few weeks we have seen straw leaving sheds, which would seem to indicate that stocks are beginning to get tight," one Kildare tillage grower said.
Round bales of straw were making from €12 to €14.
Addendum November- the cost of 8x4x3 bales has reached €45 per bale, delivered into the west of Ireland. €15 to €17 is being paid for good quality round bales at the start of November.
