An Anaerobic digestion (AD)plant is to be built and opened next year in Ballymena with the potential to deal with 40,000 tonnes of chicken waste that is produced by the poultry industry in the North each year.
The £23.3 million operation, part funded by a £7.4 million loan from Invest NI will have the capacity to generate 3 MW of electricity and to produce a high quality organic fertiliser.
It will be the first AD plant in the world to be exclusively powered by chicken poo.
Plants of this scale save farming businesses money and can provide vital income through the sale of the electricity generated according to Edward Northam head of investment at the UK Green Investment Bank.
And the sums involved in the operation aren’t chicken feed either!
