Conditions are tough out there for mushroom growers at the moment according to the word from the farm. Stalker has heard from several different sources that demand is pretty flat at the moment for the fresh produce.
Demand for brown mushrooms in particular is very sluggish, according to some sources. The market place is very competitive and Irish growers both north and south are having to fight for their sales.
As ever, the problem of cultivating demand for the produce comes into focus. The idea of eating mushrooms raw in salad is one that might be pushed more in the summer months in order to keep demand up. Just a thought. Or making mushrooms a must for the barbecue season?
