The gene-editing technique highlighted in last month’s issue - CRISPR Technology - has now been given the green light in the USA.
The technology is not deemed by the USDA to be a genetically modifying technique as it does not introduce new genetic material into the organism, namely the mushroom.
The snipping of gene segments in order to extend the non-browning of the mushroom is expected to enhance the shelf life of the fresh produce.
The common white button (Agaricus bisporus) mushroom is the first organism to have received this technique and subsequent clearance from regulation.
