Teagasc has discovered a way to turn buttermilk into a weapon in the fight against E.coli. Buttermilk, the byproduct of the butter making process contains a membrane that appears to be resistant to E.coli the bacteria that can be responsible for food poisoning, diarrhoea, kidney failure and sometimes death.
It’s amazing how research throws up novel uses for mundane products. The milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) used as an anti infection agent is another prime example of why research funding should be maintained and sustained in both jurisdictions in Ireland.
