Big year in Ireland for centenary celebrations, but April also marks the quatercentenary of the death of Shakespeare and notably the bicentenary of the birth of Charlotte Bronte the author of Jane Eyre.
The Bronte family of course hailed from Northern Ireland originally, with father Patrick Brunty born the son of a farm labourer in Co. Down. He it was that changed the name to Bronte.
The name Brunty is interchangeable with Prunty. Thus we come to the tenuous mushroom industry connection of Prunty Peat. What’s in a name one might ask?
