Stalker noted an item in The Mushroom People of November 1985 about the use of peat as the favoured material for a growing on.
An extract from a paper by the Head of Mushroom Science Unit at Aston University W.A.Hayes suggested that the main source of peat for the mushroom industry i.e. “reserves of peat in Eire, may be depleted in about 30 years”. Well that was three decades ago and it seems Irish peat is still going strong!
Irish peat is still regarded as the favoured material Stalker reckons.
