Growers here were delighted to see that prices for the local fresh produce were actually very good in mid August.
At the Liverpool market demand for the local mushrooms was very good, wholesalers were looking all they could get. Buoyant prices seemed to induce a buoyant mood within the industry.
However things were soured when container loads of mushroom produce from Poland arrived the week ending the 23rd of August. On Friday the 23rd the prices just slumped for Irish mushrooms.
People in the industry here still believe that it's an Irish source behind the Polish imports. The speculation is ranging about – but no one knows for sure.
Once again this is not good news for the Irish industry, neither the fact of the undercutting Polish competition nor the suspicion that an Irish company is involved.
