France’s parliament has voted to forbid big supermarkets from destroying unsold food, encouraging them to donate to charities or farms instead, as part of a national campaign against food waste.
Tesco in the UK has committed to a trial scheme to give away unsold food at the end of each day to charities such as homeless hostels and children’s breakfast clubs.
Tesco said it threw away 55,400 tons of food in the last year, of which 30,000 tons could otherwise have been eaten. Trialling this new app to help pass the food on to the needful is a good step in the right direction.
