Stalker’s eye was caught by the headline in the papers recently – “There’s no such thing as a superfood. It’s nonsense.” The article mentioned goji berries, kelp, raspberries, spinach, oysters, walnuts, and green tea. All have had big claims made about their health benefits. But according to one expert, University College Dublin’s professor of Nutrition Mike Gibney, it’s all just marketing. As he says there is no evidence that any of these foods are in any way unusually good.
Coming up to the Christmas splurge the professor offers this advice: “There’s no such thing as a good or bad food. There are good diets and bad diets.
The greater the variety in your diet, the more likely it is to provide a reasonable balance. And a lot more plant food and a lot less animal food is not a bad idea.”
Stalker still reckons mushrooms are a “super” food.
