News that Russia banned Polish produce imports in the wake of western sanctions showed just how perilous the state of play is now in the region of eastern Europe.
Consequently Russia has banned all agricultural imports from the EU, US and beyond.
The sanctions imposed were part of the range of measures aimed at Russia over the whole debacle in the Ukraine, even before the tragic downing of the Malaysian airliner last month. The ban has been imposed for sanitary reasons and has now been extended to imports from the rest of the EU and US.
There's always the possibility of impact if produce is displaced from one market into another. Could a redirection of Polish produce into the UK happen, affecting Irish supply?
No matter what prices could be pushed down quite severely due to over-supply. We shall see.
