The word is that straw is pretty scarce at the moment in the country.
It’s a long enough time to the next harvest so that scarcity can only but get more exacerbated. Some compost firms in Ireland are already buying in straw from across the water, as they are finding the price for straw more competitive than the local price offered.
Obviously there might be the knock on effect of price increase in the compost, but it’s too early to say that for sure now.
Watch this space, as they say, and also listen out for any of the laments from growers if compost prices do go up.
