The extreme cold temperatures that enwrapped North America in early January were in stark contrast to the milder stormy weather we were experiencing here in Ireland and the UK. The weather phenomenon that caused wind chill temperatures of minus 49C was a polar vortex. Let’s hope that vortex stays away from these islands.
It was due to the cold air mass over there that the jet stream fired the storms our way.
No matter what way you look at it the world is interconnected and the weather is too. So far January has been pretty mild if wet, tricking nature into thinking spring has sprung a bit early.
There’s plenty of scope yet though for some Arctic weather of our own to hit before Spring proper arrives.
