There has been a recent surge in demand for berries in the supermarkets.
Berries are now the seventh most sought after item at Tesco. What is behind this surge?
A boom in home baking is the answer.
And what is credited with causing the boom in home baking – none other than The Great British Bake-off television programme. Data from Tesco’s Clubcard loyalty scheme reveals that currants and berries have risen into the top 10 from 19th in 2008. Milk remains the most popular item, above bananas, bog roll, onions, carrot and baked beans.
The bake –off show is presented by Mary Berry funnily enough.
Maybe what we need to boost demand for the fresh produce is a programme presented by Matthew Mushroom?
Although demand is good for mushrooms at the moment, as was mentioned at the conference in Monaghan.
