The lecture at the Mushroom Days event by Leo Van Griensven "Mushrooms: a healthy business" included the instruction from the esteemed doctor that no opportunity should be missed to drive home the message that mushrooms are a healthy option.
Research into all different types of health benefiting mushrooms is ongoing worldwide. Of interest too are the vitamin D benefits from mushrooms, at a time when wartime diseases like rickets and scurvy have reappeared on the medical map. Rickets is caused by a lack of vitamin D and calcium and can lead to bone deformities.
Dieticians in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales, said they were seeing an increase in both diseases, which were thought to have been consigned to history. A new report indicates that since the start of the credit crisis, consumption of fruit and vegetables has fallen in the UK at a faster rate than in Western Europe as a whole, Eastern Europe and the US.
Also another new study reports that up to 90 percent of elderly people have a vitamin D deficiency which affects their physical abilities.
