The annual rounding up of Ireland’s top 1000 companies produced by The Irish Times examined their performances in 2013. In the mix of Irish companies were two mushroom sector companies.
Monaghan Mushrooms of course slotted into the list at a respectable position - 189, with a turnover estimated at €275 million and an employee count of 2,750. The position has slipped since the last inclusion in the list by five places from 184.
The other company from the sector listed is Walsh Mushrooms, coming in at position 573 with an estimated turnover of €60 million with an employee count of 200. Interesting to note that Monaghan come in on the list higher than big high street names like Boots (190) and Easons (194), and many other notably well known companies operating in Ireland.
It’s also a bit strange that the company slips a few notches even though it is expanding and merging with big companies in Europe.
Still though, the health of the mushroom sector is obviously strengthened by having two top 1000 companies.
