A recent report indicates that leading Irish sportsmen are lacking vitamin D, which we all know is primarily obtained from exposure to sunlight.
Ireland's top amateur boxers, GAA players and par-olympians were all found to be lacking in the vital nutrient. There was a deficiency detected all through the year but especially in the darker winter months.
The study was carried out by the Northern Ireland centre for Food and Health NICHE at the University of Ulster Coleraine.
The study recommends that athletes living at higher latitudes such as Ireland and Britain, should be supplemented with Vitamin D3 over the winter months in the absence of sufficient sunlight.
Perhaps there's a chance here to push the Vitamin D attributes of mushrooms. Stalker can see the promo now - sporting stars tucking into a healthy mushroom dish, boosting their D intake - helping to stave off inflammation and injuries with the help of the humble shroom!
