As the New Year chimed in, down South all the media hubbub was about the Gathering. Hmmm, didn’t it all sound just a tad familiar?
Cast the mind back to 2000 A.D. There was a postcard campaign “A thousand good reasons to bring them home this year” – a write and invite competition as part of the Millennium festivals.
Citizens were encouraged to write to family or loved ones to invite them to Ireland “for our special millennium celebrations”. There were cash prizes up for grabs – to help them with their fares.
Ah those were the days. It does seem though that there is nothing new under the sun. However it doesn’t stop government types claiming originality and new thinking. Bunkum one might say.
