Tracing the lure of mushrooms back to the Vikings and their penchant for spiking one of their warrior’s mead with fly agaric and then swilling his urine in order to get a decanted brew without the seriously bad side effects.
On the battlefield they were known as Beserkers, as the hallucinogenic properties of the mushrooms drove them mad and wild. Interesting stuff, if a tad disgusting.
