Alan Titchmarsh is in a turf war over peat it would seem.
Reports in the national UK media reveal that he is under fire from fellow gardeners over his use of peat.
Titchmarsh admits to using peat sometimes for particular plants.
Fellow green thumbed gardener ALys Fowler maintains that the 24 million wheelbarrows of peat used in British gardens every year were dug from bogs in eastern Europe and Ireland destroying habitat and releasing carbon into the atmosphere.
In a letter in response to charges levelled Titchmarsh revealed that he had not used pure peat in his garden for over 20 years.
He uses a half a bucketful of peat perhaps in a year.
His view on peat extraction – it regenerates at the rate of a centimetre per year – banning it may be a bit extreme.
