Stalker was amused by some correspondence in the national press recently regarding foul strokes in golf involving mushrooms.
One letter writer asked if his wife should be penalised for mistakenly playing a white puffball fungus instead of her golf ball.
A reply to the initial letter interpreted the rules as meaning, that although she did not play a wrong ball and therefore should not receive a penalty, she did play a stroke and should add one to her score.
Stalker remembers a incident at the British Open a few years back where the same happened, but cannot remember if the golfer was penalised or made to add a stroke to his card.
Happily there were no such incidents at the recent Ryder Cup at which a few local players made some impressive contributions.
