In the recent Agri-food industry report Food Harvest 2020 compiled in the Republic, there were a few items that struck Stalker as slightly odd.
One bullet point was that horticulture, currently worth €370 million in the South, could be enhanced in value by reducing imports. That elicited a kind of ‘Doh’ response.
The other item was that organic production should continue to be supported by the Department of Agriculture. Surely another ‘Doh‘moment.
One supposes in these days of austerity and with Snip Bords, everything is up for question.
But one gets the feeling both in Ireland and the UK that the governments could end up throwing out the baby with the bath water, with their over eager aims to cut, cut, cut.
