FINAL STRAW?
The shortage of straw is an ongoing problem in the compost end of the mushroom industry. Securing the amount needed to keep production going until the next harvest is in, will tell a tale. Word is that compost prices will struggle to stay down come the New Year. As is so often the case, a shortage of a raw material leads to a price spike inevitability. As the compost is the foundation of the mushroom industry, one must expect that produce prices will take a hike too. And as energy costs are expected to increase too, the market could be in for a surprise price jolt come 2010.
