Stalker wonders how many growers were watching Jimmy’s Food Factory on BBC1, on Wednesday the 25th of November.
If so, they would have caught one of the few times that commercial mushroom growing has been explained to the masses on telly.
The item was very informative, following the mushrooming process from spawning to pinning, through casing and compost, to picking and eating.
The presenter tried to explain the “trickery” behind frightening the mycelium into fruiting.
The action happened at Patrick Hearn’s farm Cable Mushrooms. Throughout the series, Jimmy Doherty looked at some of the tricks food manufacturers use to maintain a constant supply of seasonal foods all year round, as he concluded his mission to unravel the scientific secrets behind mass food production.
Munching on a freshly fried mushroom from the farm Jimmy says- “all we need now are some sausages.”
To which Patrick replies – “No, they’re good enough on their own!”
A perfect publicity pitch for the fresh produce there, Stalker reckons.
