The October Mushroom Business magazine carried the news that Agricultural Supply Company was set to close, above an article about Monaghan Mushrooms purchasing the Rol-Land Farms in Ontario.
The Biz conjectured that the AG supply closure would put Monaghan in a unique position in the UK mushroom industry because it has the two Tunnel Tech operations in the UK. It’s either buy compost from Monaghan or import from the continent.
As the Rol-land piece stated – “Monaghan Mushrooms is a leading grower and marketer of mushrooms with 1,400 employees in Europe. In the UK, Europe’s largest and most competitive mushroom market, the company is the market leader with a 45% market share.”
Are we looking at total Monaghan hegemony in the UK market and potentially further afield in years to come.
