Around one third of Irish workplace deaths take place on farms, according to latest figures.
David Meredith of Teagasc’s Rural Economy Research Centre revealed that new spatial analysis indicated that the border and midland regions accounted for a higher proportion of fatal accidents for their proportion of population, while the west and south east had proportionately less deaths per population.
"The issue of fatalities among the elderly on farms is now a cause for significant concern. "
Mr Meredith stated at a conference on farm safety. March and July are the months when most fatal accidents occur.
