The Department of Agriculture said just over €2 billion was paid out to Irish farmers and companies in the 12-month period from October 16th, 2007 to October 15th, 2008.
The department’s website, www.agriculture.gov.ie, listed several big companies among the largest recipients. Stalker was amazed at some of the sums - it sure is big money. Nestling at number 5 on the list was none other than CMP.
Commercial Mushroom PRS Co-op Co Monaghan netted €2,851,824 from CAP funds. That is a big slice of pie.
The other mushroom PO noted on the list came in at position 15. Dewfresh Mushroom PO Ltd Tara, Co Meath received funding of €447,160.
It’s great to see mushroom P.O.’s benefiting from euro funding, one hopes that the monies trickle down to growers and workers in the way surely it is intended.
Stalker notes that Dewfresh PO is sponsoring a tea/coffee break at the conference, and CMP is sponsoring finger food towards the end of the day.
Now we know where some of the funds are going - happily it’s down conference goers gullets. As they used to carouse and cheer in medieval times - eat, drink and be merry.
The top place on the list was: 1. Greencore group plc Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2, €83,377,557 - now that is a whack of dosh to be sure! The list sure does make interesting reading.
