One would probably need to be on planet Mars to not have noticed the BBC’s One Show over the past year. The programme gets more and more talked about, and gets ever bigger and better guests to appear on the show. With Northern Ireland’s very own Christine Bleakley co-hosting the show with Adrian Chiles, how could one knock it?
Thus it was that the programme covered the allure and attraction of the not so humble mushroom on the night of Friday May 1, 2009.
Christine Walkden took us behind the scenes of mushroom cultivation to show us exactly where our mushrooms come from. Who is Christine Walkden you might ask? And what might her specialism be? Her website lists her as: Gardener, Horticulturist, Lecturer, Trainer, Garden Centre Advisor, Tour Leader and Guide, Broadcaster, Writer and Photographer; Plantswoman and Horticulturalist. www.christinewalkden.com She is now the resident gardening expert on the show. The mushroom was enthused about in all it’s guises. There was even a mushroom beer tasting session - the thought of it is “ugh”.
One thing’s for sure, The One Show produce plug will have made an excellent promotion for the fresh produce - the numbers viewing the show are “peak” , so to speak.
Stalker would be interested to learn if there was a spike in demand for fresh mushrooms in the weekend or week directly following the programme. Bet there was!
