Reading a bit about Richard Fortey's writing room in Henley on Thames, Stalker was pleasantly surprised to learn of the world renowned British palaeontologist and writer’s love of mushrooms.
“It is Darwin's bicentenary, so I keep my Darwin doll in front of me. It's one of those models with an independently suspended head, so I can set it nodding and kid myself that the great man is agreeing with everything I am writing. On the walls there are pictures of fungi - mycology is another of my passions.”
It is always amazing to discover the great minds that are intrigued by the humble fungus.
It’s probably because in some respects they remain a bit of a mystery - more animal than plant, but neither; just another miracle of nature.
