Further to last month's note about the campaign to promote British and pork and to save British pork producers, Stalker came across some more on the subject this month.
In an article on the current crisis in British food, with the prices going up and suppliers quitting the whole scene, the spotlight fell once more on the plight of the pig farmers.
"The National Pig Association says that farmers lose GBP26 on every carcass they sell. Supermarkets have raised their prices , but farmers are adamant that little of this is being passed on to them, sentiments expressed in their campaign anthem 'Stand By Your Ham', a play on Tammy Wynette’s 'Stand By Your Man'. "Right now it's hard to make a living/ Rearing all your pigs for pork and ham/ The supermarkets make money/ But we don’t make any money/ And that's quite hard to understand..'"
Stalker finds that the campaign to help the pig farmers certainly works. It grabs the attention, if nothing else.
