There was big news this month for Monaghan mushroom sector firm Harte Peat.
They made the National press with news of their latest contract. Maybe it was on the coattails of Bertie Ahern that the deal made the national press, as An Taoiseach was out in South Africa on a drumming up business tour.
The Taoiseach addressed South African business leaders at an Enterprise Ireland dinner in Cape Town in the middle of January. Happily Harte Peat was one of the successful Irish companies on the trade mission backed by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Enterprise Ireland.
At least 50 Irish companies are targeting South Africa on the back of the trade mission. Exporting peat products to the horn of Africa is no mean feat and the company is rightly feted for breaking into the South African mushroom sector.
It once again goes to show the expertise that Ireland has in the field of mushroom growing that is internationally recognised, as well as the raw materials that we have had gladly bestowed upon us in our natural environment on this island.
Long may Harte's pre-eminence in the peat world continue.
