October was the driest in Ireland for more than 30 years. The highest level of sunshine was recorded in Clones Co. Monaghan during October by Met Eireann.
The figures for November aren't in yet, but the Met Office in the UK is putting out its long-term weather forecast for this winter already. As ever, one takes the long range forecast with the requisite pinch of salt.
The Met Office's long-term weather forecast is for a mild and damp winter. Temperatures are likely to be above the national average of 3.7C, according to the latest long-range forecasts for December, January and February. But the prediction is that it will be colder than last year, the second mildest winter since national records began.
Looking at the profusion of berries on hedgerows up and down the country, some amateur meteorologists are predicting a harsh winter ahead.
The old portents are the most reliable, they say.
