The demand for straw this year continues to be one of the factors weighing heavily on the minds of compost producers in the past few months.
Even though the harvest this year so far has been a good one by all accounts - the price of straw is still, to use one industry sources word, crazy. Demand has left the farmer in the driving seat with regards to pricing and consequently the price for straw is through the roof.
The extra pressure on compost prices has been evident over the summer months and is set to continue.
Monaghan who had a Euro20 surcharge per ton on their compost for a specified short term measure, have dropped the "surcharge", but now the price has gone up by Euro10.
The situation across the board is much the same.
This autumn it seems as though the price of everything is set to just keep on rising.
