The Census 2006 findings have thrown up some interesting stats and trends within the society in the South.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said the survey clearly highlighted the diminishing importance of agriculture in recent decades.
The sector accounted for more than 50% of employment in 1926. Last year the corresponding figure was less than 5%.
The decline in agricultural has been in tandem with the explosive growth in the service sector. Stalker wonders if that swing from the land to services is irrevocable.
Recently it was announced by one minister that government should try to make farming a "sexy" career choice! It was never thus and nor will it ever be.
One other factoid that leapt out from the CSO report was the number of cars on Irish roads.
In 2006 the figure stood at 1.96 million cars on road - doubtless that has topped the 2 million mark by now.
It's no wonder there's traffic jams galore around the country.
Maybe getting back to the land and on to our bikes might make us all happier and healthier in the long run.
