Stalker is hearing that the compost situation is getting tighter as was predicted earlier in the year.
The straw shortage has begun to bite big time. The added costs to the compost yards from hauling straw from across the water is now being factored in to the price of compost.
One company has reportedly put an across the board surcharge of Euro 20 per ton on the price.
This is reported as being a stop gap measure for the summer months, until the new straw harvest comes in.
Compost prices are at an all time high and growers are feeling the pinch. Industry observers predict that the knock-on effect will be more growers leaving the industry and a dramatic shortage of mushrooms in the short-term over the summer months.
