A reader of the Times newspaper in the UK sent the folllowing perplexed epistle to the paper at the beginning of this year. - 'I bought some mushrooms, described on the box as: " Mushrooms cultivated on a substrate from extensive agriculture which is permitted in organic farming during a transitional period." This must be Euro-speak. What on earth does it mean?' The poor Times reader is right, it is Euro-speak, and it's also, technically, crap.
