Stalker was interested in an email received this month on the subject of Spent Mushroom Compost. It came from the offices of the National Centre for Freshwater Studies, which is part of the Department of Applied Science at the Dundalk Institute of Technology.
The research boffins there were applying for a grant to conduct research into the generation of ethanol from spent mushroom compost (SMC). The thinking is that if this study was successful, SMC could be used as a value added product and may not need to be spread on land.
Stalker hopes that the folks in Dundalk managed to find their funding before the deadline ran out.
It would be a shame if research was hampered by lack of funds - especially in the apparently cash awash times the Republic of Ireland is said to be experiencing. R&D is the bedrock of national economic well-being.
Stalker also wonders can you make anything potable to imbibe with this SMC ethanol.
